A typical German ambassador – with a wink.
With Teckl, the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship 2027 is relying on a dog breed that is associated with Germany like almost no other. The dachshund embraces this well-known image of the host country – but with a wink and a modern, independent character.
Because Teckl is anything but reserved: Dachshunds are considered courageous, intelligent, headstrong, and extremely people-oriented. They are active companions, love challenges, and possess a strong hunting instinct. In Teckl's case, however, this instinct is directed less at game and more at pucks. With his curious and sometimes cheeky nature, he possesses qualities that are perfectly suited to ice hockey.
"With Teckl, we've found a mascot that has an unmistakable connection to the host country while also possessing a strong personality of its own. He's friendly, curious, and self-assured, but he can also be cheeky at times. Furthermore, the dog, as man's best friend, fits perfectly with the 'Festival of Friendship'. Design and concept
Teckl was developed and designed by transferring the characteristic features and traits of a dachshund into a unique character for the 2027 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship. The goal was a highly recognizable mascot that would work both on the ice and in the arenas, as well as in communications surrounding the tournament. The mascot's subsequent use as a live mascot in the arenas also played a key role in the design from the outset.
“The dachshund is a wonderful character to play with: it’s considered typically German, perhaps even has a somewhat stuffy image, and at the same time is incredibly endearing and strong-willed. We wanted to humorously resolve precisely this apparent contradiction with Teckl. The name itself also reflects this playful approach: Dachshund, Teckel, and Dachshund all refer to the same breed of dog, although ‘Teckel’ is primarily known from hunting terminology,” explains Gröbner.
