The ECDC Memmingen Indians are masters of DEB-Oberliga 2025/2026. For Head Coach Daniel Huhn, the triumph against Deggendorfer SC was a very special success.
"I've been with the Memmingen Indians for ten years now, six as a player and four as head coach. That's why winning the title felt magical to me," raves the Munich native, who was responsible for the team's bench. He recalls: "As a player, I once lost an Oberliga final with Memmingen, and I definitely didn't want to experience that again."
Away win in the third match as a preliminary decision
His team obliged him and gave it their all in the final series of the 2025/2026 Oberliga season. "The series was close, but I think we wanted it a bit more than Deggendorf. We had the necessary playoff grit and got under their skin more. Our mentality was on our side, because both teams were actually evenly matched. It was also important that we kept the Jackson twins under control in almost every game and that our special teams did a great job." Memmingen lost the first game of the finals in Deggendorf, then won at home and also triumphed in the following away game. The Indians never relinquished the lead they had gained in the series and ultimately triumphed 4-2.
The main round defeat provided additional motivation
“I believe we deserved to become champions, because we won seven out of ten matches against DSC this season, including the regular season games.” He also considers the regular season games against their final opponent to be very important in light of the final series. “We won three times, so we knew we could beat them. But shortly before the end of the regular season, we lost to them for the first time, ultimately costing us our chance at the championship.” Oberliga Süd "We lost. So we wanted revenge." And he sees another reason for his team's success: "In my opinion, we had the stronger opponents on the way to the final, so we were already more in fighting mode and challenged at a high level." It was also noticeable that the Indians entered the final with a very young goalie. But Justus Roth, despite being only 21 years old, managed to impress. "He was outstanding, I was impressed by his composure."
DEL2 in focus
Now, the 39-year-old Huhn, who remains loyal to the Memmingen Indians even in the DEL2, has a lot of work ahead of him. "Of course, we celebrated after winning the title, but now I'm already in work mode. We're building the roster for the upcoming season and hope that we can capitalize on the current euphoria and deliver a successful season."
