A courageous performance, but the favorite prevailed: The German women's ice hockey team lost their quarterfinal match at the Olympic ice hockey tournament 1-5 (0-2, 0-1, 1-2) against Canada. This ends the tournament for the team coached by Jeff MacLeod. Franziska Feldmeier scored the game-winning goal in front of 3.913 spectators at the Milano Rho Ice Hockey Arena while Germany was shorthanded.
The German women started strong. After just 17 seconds, Emily Nix had a clear shot, but unfortunately, her effort went just wide. Canada responded immediately, with Ella Shelton missing a cross-ice pass. In the second minute, the Canadians took the lead. After a German line change, the Canadians had too much space, and Brianne Jenner slotted the puck past Sandra Abstreiter. Despite this setback, Germany continued to play with spirit. Laura Kluge had another good chance while shorthanded, but her shot was blocked. In the 10th minute, Laura Stacey had a good opportunity for the Canadians, but otherwise, the German team defended very compactly. Shortly before the end of the second period, Claire Thompson (18th minute) scored the second goal with a long-range shot.
Canada came out of the locker room with more pace for the second period and bombarded Abstreiter with shots. The German goalie, however, made some excellent saves, including a shoulder stop against Sarah Fillier to prevent a third goal. Shortly after, Julia Gosling missed the rebound, and then Abstreiter made a glove save against Natalie Spooner (23rd/25th minute). Germany relieved the pressure through Celina Haider, who lurked dangerously in front of the Canadian net (26th minute). In the 28th minute, the German team had a power play. Nix was a step too late, and Canada's goalie Emerance Maschmeyer stopped a shot from Kluge (28th minute). The game remained close, partly because Germany continued to defend well. However, Fillier scored on the power play in the 38th minute from a sharp angle to make it 3-0.
Blayre Turnbull extended the lead with a solo effort just 38 seconds into the final period. In the 44th minute, Abstreiter prevented further damage from a deflection by Spooner. Germany continued to press, and Kluge, after a fine solo effort, fired another shot on goal at Maschmeyer (47th minute). In the 49th minute, the German women finally rewarded themselves for their strong performance: Franziska Feldmeier scored a shorthanded goal in a one-on-one situation against Maschmeyer. However, Canada allowed no further goals. Captain Marie-Philip Poulin sealed the 5-1 victory with a power-play goal in the 56th minute.
