This year's Grassroots Camp took place last weekend at Augsburg's Curt Frenzel Ice Stadium. Fourteen current or former ice hockey players participated in the introductory course for future referees.
The grassroots camp was divided into a theoretical and a practical part. The main focus of the course was explaining the potential career path to becoming a professional referee in the DEL, jointly analyzing game situations such as offside/icing, and discussing appropriate penalties for stick fouls or physical offenses.
After the theoretical part and the subsequent on-ice training, the program included officiating a trial game. The participants were extremely nervous about this unfamiliar situation. Everyone was given the opportunity to try out being a referee and a linesman. After an initial adjustment period, officiating the game for the DNL/U17 team of Augsburger eV (AEV) became increasingly smooth, so much so that at the end of the grassroots camp, many participants expressed interest in registering for the Bavarian Ice Sports Association's (BEV) referee training course for the upcoming season. Two participants were also invited to the DEL2/DEL referee training course to gain even deeper insights into refereeing.
Manuela Gröger-Schneider leader DEB-Arbitration: "This year's Grassroots Camp in Augsburg was a success. All participants were highly motivated and showed great interest in gaining insight into the work of an ice hockey referee. The active DEB/DEL referees shared their valuable experience and later joined the participants on the ice to referee the AEV DNL and U17 teams' games. We would like to sincerely thank the AEV, Thomas Winter, Marian Rohatsch, Tim Heffner, Jonas Reinold, and Werner Haas for the successful implementation of the grassroots camp.
