The Deutscher Eishockey-Bund (DEB) warmly congratulates Marco Sturm on his appointment as the new head coach of the Boston Bruins. The announcement was made today, Thursday, by the storied NHL club from Massachusetts.
Marco Sturm becomes the first German head coach in the history of the National Hockey League (NHL). The 46-year-old is no stranger to the Bruins: Between 2005 and 2010, Sturm played as a forward in a total of 302 games for the "Original Six" team, scoring 108 goals and 89 assists. After retiring, Marco Sturm began his coaching career with the Deutscher Eishockey-Bund. From 2015 to 2018, he was the national coach of the German national team, significantly shaping the development of German ice hockey during this time.
A milestone under his leadership was the historic Winning the silver medal at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang. The German selection defeated Sweden and Canada, among others, on its way to the final, only losing in overtime to the Olympic Athletes from Russia. It was the first Olympic medal for German men's ice hockey since 1976. In November 2018 (after the Deutschland Cup), Sturm joined the Los Angeles Kings organization and gained important experience in North American professional ice hockey. Most recently, he served as head coach of the AHL team Ontario Reign, the Kings' farm team.
With the appointment to Head coach of the Boston Bruins Marco Sturm is now returning to the big stage of international ice hockey – in an organization that is one of the most traditional and successful in the NHL.
The DEB wishes Marco Sturm much success for this new and outstanding task!
