The Deutscher Eishockey-Bund (DEB) orand German ice hockey mourns Gerhard LichtneckerThe long-time referee chairman of the DEB died at the age of 68 after a serious illness.
Gerhard Lichtnecker shaped German refereeing in an extraordinary way for many years – primarily as an active referee on the ice. He officiated a total of 1927 games, including 221 international assignments as an umpire.
On 1 April 2006, it was first introduced by the then DEB-Presidency under Franz Reindl to Referee Chairman – a moment he later described with a smile as a possible April Fool's joke. It marked the beginning of a remarkable career at the top of German refereeing. With his great passion for ice hockey and tireless commitment, he took on this responsible position several times and was most recently re-elected for the fourth time in April 2018. His term of office lasted until 2022 and was characterized by innovation, team spirit, and vision.
Gerhard Lichtnecker was not only a reliable organizer and designer, but also a team player who also scored points with his humorous manner. He worked closely with the referees of the regional associations, the leagues and the executive committee of the DEB He was always concerned with strengthening the public image of referees, attracting new talent, and ensuring the highest quality standards.
Together with his committee, he implemented numerous groundbreaking developments in German refereeing, many of which also received international recognition. He was particularly passionate about promoting young talent – many young talents who were nurtured under his leadership later appeared on the ice in international tournaments, even in gold medal games. For many years, he himself was involved with the DEB beyond IIHF Supervisor andand member of the IIHF Officials Committees.
Gerhard Lichtnecker has played a special role in shaping German ice hockey and will be remembered as a passionate comrade, intelligent initiator and reliable person.
Our thoughts are with his family and all those close to him during this difficult time. The Deutscher Eishockey-Bund will honor Gerhard Lichtnecker's memory.
