After a proud 16 years, the popular mascot Urmel ends his successful international career with the Deutscher Eishockey-Bund (DEBSince 2008, Urmel has not only been a loyal companion of the German national ice hockey teams, but also a symbol of passion, team spirit and the unwavering enthusiasm of the FansNow the time has come for Urmel to retire from his active ice hockey career at DEB and make room for a new era.
Urmel, the cheerful mascot who won the hearts of young and old with his smile and charming manner, was there at every important game and event. Whether at exciting international matches, at Young Talent tournaments or at Fan-Events – Urmel always brought joy and a special magic. The children loved playing with Urmel, taking pictures and getting autographs, while the adults appreciated his positive energy and dedication to hockey.
Saying goodbye to Urmel is not easy, both for the Fans as well as for the organization. The DEB would like to thank Urmel for all the unforgettable moments and valuable support. "Urmel has played a crucial role in promoting the sport in Germany and increasing enthusiasm for ice hockey over the last 16 years. We are infinitely grateful for his loyalty and commitment," says Dr. Peter Merten, President of the DEB.
At the Deutschland Cup In 2024, a worthy successor will be introduced to follow in Urmel’s big footsteps. The new mascot is intended to inspire future generations of ice hockey fans.Fans and inspire them at national team performances. “Urmel’s successor will carry the values of DEB and be an identification figure for young and old. The new mascot will be a tangible character and reflect the values and diversity of our sport," Merten continued. All visitors to the tournament in Landshut next November can take part in choosing the name for our new mascot. Because together we want to find the right name for our companion.
Nevertheless, Urmel remains an integral part of German ice hockey history and will always have a special place in the hearts of Fans and our national players. The numerous memories of his performances, his dances and his warm hugs will live on.
