The U16 women's national team traveled to Bratislava this week to take part in this year's European Cup in the Slovakian capital. The team led by U16 honorary national coach Christoph Höhenleitner competed in Group B against the teams from Poland, France and the Czech Republic. In the subsequent placement game against Austria, the German young talent selection reached fourth place in the final rankings.
The tournament history of the German U16 women’s national team:
Poland – Germany:
The German team played a good game against the Poles, especially considering that many of the players had not been on the ice for some time and had to find their rhythm again. Nevertheless, the German U16 young talent selection dominated the Polish women throughout the entire season, created many chances and deservedly won. Thanks to the double pack from striker Isabel Manns (37th / 44th), they were able to DEB-Women ended up winning 2-0.
Germany – France:
The team of U16 national coach Christoph Höhenleitner also remained unbeaten in the second game. The team had a bit of a hard time finding its way into the game, but got into the game better from the second third onwards. From this point on they have DEB-Women took control of the game and at the same time showed the patience required until the first goal was scored. After two goalless thirds, the game ended 4-1 and deservedly went to the German U16 women. The goal scorers up DEB-side were Emilija Birka (34th), Lena Spagert (37th), Alexandra Boico (40th) and Hanna Weichenhain (44th).
Czech Republic – Germany:
After a day without games, the game against the league leaders from the Czech Republic was about winning the group. The German U16 women played a very strong game and were the dominant team for much of the game. The DEBThe team believed in themselves and acted accordingly on the ice. The German team was in the lead with 3:2 until shortly before the end of the game, then the Czechs managed to equalize to make it 3:3, which, due to the better goal difference, meant that the Czech Republic won the group. The DEBGoal scorers were Johanna Gerber (8th), Hanna Weichenhain (14th) and Isabel Manns (28th). The German team thus finished their Group B in second place.
Austria Germany:
In the game for third place they had to DEB-Women suffered a defeat against Team Austria. In a hard-fought and high-scoring game, the German team repeatedly fell behind and so the Austrians ultimately had the better end on their side with a score of 5:3. The German young talent selection therefore took fourth place in the final rankings at this year's European Cup. This means a significant increase compared to the previous season, where DEBteam still had to finish in seventh place.
The European Cup in the Slovakian capital Bratislava was played in a shortened format of three 15-minute games. The tournament marked the end of the season for the German U16 women, who can look back on a successful season by winning the bronze medal at the Youth Olympics 2024.
U16 honorary national coach Christoph Höhenleitner: “If you consider that we had no real preparation time, were only able to complete one training session together before the start of the tournament and many of the players were actually already on their summer break, the team did well in this European Cup and developed day by day. At the end of a long season, the last game against Austria was perhaps a little lacking. However, in the preliminary round game against the Czech Republic, the team performed very well and played the best game of the season. All in all, the coaching team is very satisfied with the performance at this tournament. We are convinced that this year group will have a good future in the U18 national team if they continue to work so hard and diligently.”
