The German U20 national team won the relegation game against Norway 5-4 after extra time and thus secured relegation. Moritz Elias scored the sudden death goal in overtime. The other goalscorers for this DEBteam were Kevin Bicker, Veit Oswald, Phillip Sinn and Niklas Hübner. Matthias Bittner was in goal.
The do-or-die game, after which the loser would be relegated, initially started slowly. Both teams were able to score their first opportunities, but had no sense of success. But after ten minutes of play, that was it DEB-Team that scored the first goal. Julius Marsh backhanded a pass across the slot to Kevin Bicker, who hit the puck directly into the net, putting the German team on the scoreboard. The Norwegians, as would later become clear, were unimpressed by setbacks. Noah Steen scored in the 16th minute to make the score 1-1.
After the first break, an open exchange of blows developed. Both teams set a high pace to take the lead. Matthias Bittner in DEB-Goal was able to parry all of the Norwegians' shot attempts, as was his counterpart Markus Stensrud. In the 29th minute, Veit Oswald made an irresistible run in front of the Norwegian goal, actually found a small gap under the Norwegian goalkeeper's guard and made it 2:1 for the DEB-Selection. The Norwegians were able to increase the pressure on the German goal again towards the end of the third and managed to equalize through Mats Bakke Olsen (35th). Versterheim had a great chance to take the Norwegian lead a minute and a half before the break, but Matthias Bittner blocked the puck with his stick hand.
The Norwegians came out of the second break more courageously and so the first minutes of the third belonged to the Scandinavians. The DEBteam survived this wave of attacks and found new opportunities for themselves. In the 50th minute Phillip Sinn scored to make it 3-2. Just 48 seconds later, Niklas Hübner increased the score to 4-2 with his second goal of the tournament. Anyone who thought they had seen the preliminary decision with this double blow was proven wrong: the Norwegians, undeterred by the new setback, finally managed to score the fourth goal through Michael Brandsegg-Nygard (55th) and Bakke Olsen (56th) shortly before the end of the 60 minutes :4 compensation.
The tension reached its climax at the start of extra time, in which the Norwegians again had the first dangerous chance. However, a cross pass slipped over Brandsegg-Nygard's stick. For the DEBteam then Moritz Elias ran into the attacking third, circled the goal in a wide arc and finished with a perfect shot into the corner of the goal: the winning goal that meant they stayed in the league.
Samuel Schindler, Roman Kechter and Matthias Bittner were among the three best players DEBsquad elected.
