The German women's national ice hockey team scored at Deutschland Cup on Friday evening against Finland, currently fourth in the IIHF world rankings. The Finns won the game 1.667:1 (8:0, 2:0, 4:1) in front of 2 spectators. Goal scorer for that DEBteam was Theresa Wagner.
In terms of personnel, the roster changed in two positions: Laura Kluge and Theresa Wagner replaced Lola Liang and Yvette Reichelt after their Bundeswehr assignment - both of them played their first Deutschland-Cup-Game on Wednesday. 18-year-old Chiara Schultes played as starting goalie in her first international match.
The favorites from Finland took control of the game right from the start and created their first chances to score. Chiara Schultes in the German goal got a direct feel for the international level and was able to distinguish herself with her first saves. But she was powerless in the eleventh minute when Sanni Vanhanen netted the goal after a pass across the slot. Almost four minutes later the doorbell rang for the second time, just as DEB-Captain Daria Gleißner came from the penalty box. Noora Tulus poked the puck over the line (14th). Through their first power play they had DEB-Women's biggest chance in the 17th minute through Tabea Botthof's shot against the post. As a result, further opportunities developed for the German team, but Finland's two-goal lead remained.
The second period began with a great opportunity for Katharina Häckelsmiller when she ran solo towards the Finnish goal. A power play followed for them DEB-Women, in which they quickly found the power play formation. But the guests had a 2-on-0 counterattack, which Viivi Vainikka used coolly to make it 0:3. In the same power play, Pauliina Salonen scored from the face-off point to make it 0:4. The Finns remained undisciplined and had to go to the penalty box again. Laura Kluge had the best chance in the power play that followed, but the Finns scored again: Julia Liikala (29th) once again in the minority and Jenna Kaila (34th) finally increased the score to 0:6.
The final third was just 22 seconds old when Tulus scored their second goal of the evening. Jule Schiefer then shot just past the far post. But in the 50th minute it was Theresa Wagner who deflected a shot from Laura Kluge for the first German goal (50th). In return, the Finns were able to restore their old lead through Kiira Yrjänen. It remained 1:8 until the end.
Laura Kluge was named player of the evening.
The women continue tomorrow Saturday at 14:30 p.m. against the Czech Republic. In the evening the men will also play against Austria at 18.00 p.m. Both games will be shown live and free of charge on MagentaSport again.
