Welcome to another exciting edition of our DEB “Coach The Coach” podcast. We are delighted to welcome the national coach for science and education of the German Roller Sports and Inline Association, Felix Grätz. Felix is responsible for the area of skateboarding, which we will be discussing in detail today.
In this episode, we'll first talk about a groundbreaking development in skateboarding - inclusion in the Olympic program. Felix will give us valuable insights into this milestone for skateboarding and how the skateboarding scene itself reacted to this decision. This raises the exciting question of how large the association's own talent pool really is or whether the best of the best, who have the greatest possible chance of an Olympic medal, can possibly be found outside the association's structures.
We all know the club landscape in German ice hockey, but how exactly is the sport of skateboarding organized? What age structures are there, what role do “clubs” play and what exactly does young talent work look like? Here too, Felix gives us intensive structural insights and explains to us the importance of self-organized learning.
Another important aspect that we highlight in this episode is young talent work and recruitment in skateboarding. Felix introduces us to the efforts to recruit, develop young talent and grow the skateboarding community. Among other things, we delve into the world of social media and find out how these platforms influence the recruitment of athletes. We also talk about protective gear, the optimal age of performance in competitions and how the demands of skateboarding have changed over time.
Last but not least, we will focus intensively on the topic of competitions. What competition requirements are there, how is the support provided by the national coaches and what challenges do they face in terms of age structures.
Stay tuned as this episode promises to be extremely enlightening for both skateboarding enthusiasts and anyone interested in learning more about this exciting sport.
