The Deutscher Eishockey-Bund (DEB) is launching its Germany-wide referee recruiting campaign together with the regional associations. At the state level, a refereeing career can be pursued from the age of 16.

Season opener: referee courses in Füssen
For everyone who has already decided to become a referee, the DEB Four courses were held in July and August 2023. Around 220 referees from the Penny DEL, the DEL2 and the DEBLeagues have taken part in the courses and received their license for the 2023/24 season. In addition, 43 international licenses were applied for by the World Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF).
The focus of the referee course was, among other things, rules training, information about rule changes, communication on the field, athletics tests and psychology.
The content was conveyed by experienced experts in the following lectures and workshops:

- Karl Schwarzenbrunner (National Coach Science & Training): Scientific aspects of refereeing
- Tom Kossak (Sports psychologist): Communication and external impact
- Rob Shick (NHL Advisor): Ice hockey rules, ice hockey game and tips for better game management
- Gerhard Müller (Rules speaker): Ice hockey rules (new IIHF rules) as well as rule interpretation and interpretation
- Jörg von Ameln (Head of game operations Penny DEL): Video evidence, new live stream/video evidence technology in the Penny DEL
- Markus Schubert (Director DEB-Game operations): Implementation regulations in the Oberliga, DFEL and DNL

Head of Refereeing DEL2 Stefan Vogl: “The referee courses in July and August are the annual starting signal for the new season. Working with the approximately 50 highly motivated referees per course was an enormous pleasure. There is great anticipation for the upcoming season, the referees are well prepared and excited for the first games.”
DEB-Referee Achim Moosberger: “For us referees, the summer break comes to an end with the summer courses. Here we prepare intensively for the next season by working on our skills and completing fitness and rules tests. The focus is on analyzing certain game situations, working with video evidence and improving positional play as a referee/lines person. We cover physical fitness by carrying out various endurance, coordination and strength tests on and off the ice. All in all, we are laying the foundation for the next few months.”
