Welcome to a new episode of the DEB “Coach The Coach Podcast”, now every last Friday of the month.
It's time again to put our heads together and reflect on the year in trainer training and further education. For this purpose, Karl and Collin took time to reflect on the year 2023 and give a few outlooks for 2024.
The episode was recorded shortly before the end of the C course in Düsseldorf on August 14.08.2023th, 10. At this point, not only are there several C, B and A training courses behind them, but also 14 of XNUMX advanced training courses. The ideal time to discuss both the positive and negative aspects of the past few months.
A novelty this year was, among other things, the introduction of elective modules in the C course. Collin specifically addresses the reason for implementing elective modules. In addition, the C, B and A courses have been better coordinated in terms of content and structure in order to be even more up-to-date with the current training standards.
The participants not only benefit from the input of the speakers, but also from the knowledge and exchange among each other. In order to promote this exchange, so-called “Fuck Up Days” were introduced in this year’s A course. The trainers had to talk about mistakes they had made in the past on a specific topic and what they learned from them. It is essential to grow as a sport by creating an environment in which coaches benefit from the mutual exchange of knowledge.
Given that Karl and Collin get to know a lot of coaches every year during training and further education, the two philosophize about what makes world-class players, what is important in their training and development and whether the coaches are in Germany have also understood this - and internalized it. They talk about the potential in the trainer’s mindset and about the enormous potential that still lies in daily training work.
Unused reserves are not only in the coaching area, but above all in the club's work, the attitudes and approaches of those responsible for the club. Unfortunately, in some cases there is still a rather antiquated way of thinking, which makes it difficult for trainers to implement the current required training standards. In 2024, the two of them want to try to address the club employees more and impart knowledge in order to support the trainers in their daily work.
Other important topics include the lectures by Karl and Collin at this year's Hockey's Premier Coaching Conference Coaches Site Live at the University of Michigan, where the two were the only non-North American representatives invited (before the runner-up title) to represent German ice hockey and theirs To share expertise on the topic of contextual interference in technology acquisition.
