The German men's national team finished the Ice Hockey World Championship with the silver medal. It is the first World Championship medal in 70 years. Against Canada, the DEBteam took the lead twice, but ultimately lost 2:5. The goalscorers for Germany were JJ Peterka and Daniel Fischbuch. Moritz Müller was the player of the evening.
The DEBteam went into this final with commitment. There was no trace of nervousness and so the first few minutes belonged to the German national team. Many actions initially took place in the third of the Canadians. In the eighth minute, Moritz Seider saw DEB-Striker JJ Peterka at the Canadian blue line and passed over 15 meters. Peterka's shot hit the net a few seconds later. The Canadian coaching team called for an offside check via coach's challenge. However, the decision remained the goal. The Canadians also had more chances as the game progressed, which Mathias Niederberger was able to parry. But when Peyton Krebs ran at high speed towards the German goal and passed to Samuel Blais, Niederberger was powerless. Canada made it 1:1 at halftime (11th minute). Shortly before halftime, the duo Tiffels-Kahun had the opportunity to take the lead again, but a Canadian defender prevented the shot at the last second.
The start of the second period belonged to the Canadians. But in the 24th minute, the second penalty was given to Team Canada and Justin Barron. The German team had two or three good opportunities in the power play and got back into gear. But it was only at 5-on-5 that Daniel Fischbuch scored the 2:1 (34th minute) after assists from Maximilian Kastner and Moritz Seider. In the middle of the period, the Canadians had a long offensive sequence in which the German back line was more than challenged. As in the previous matches, the defense blocked many shots and Mathias Niederberger again distinguished himself with some Parathe one out. Being outnumbered, national coach Harold Kreis's team was unable to prevent the score from being equalised. A shot from Peyton Krebs was deflected by Lawson Crouse (38'). The second break went into the second break with a 2-2 draw.
Canada came out of the locker room again with enormous pressure. The German team had hardly any opportunities to attack at the beginning of the third. In the 45th minute, Samuel Blais scored his second goal to give Canada the lead. Milan Lucic had the 4:2 on his stick just a minute later, but only hit the post. When Tyler Toffoli scored the fourth Canadian goal in the 52nd minute, that should have been the preliminary decision. The last German attempt to shorten the lead with an empty net failed. Scott Laughton scored the final 5:2.
The German national team travels back to Germany on Monday.
