The focus today and tomorrow is on the immediate preparation for the final international match of the World Cup preparations against the USA next Tuesday evening. Just one day later, the departure to Tampere (Finland) is on the agenda.
National coach Harold Kreis: “We experience a motivated, positive team in training as well as in the dressing room at meetings. The boys are very attentive, so we were able to train quickly and intensively. The players who joined also contributed their energy and contributed to our understanding of the game. We want to bring this intensity and speed onto the ice in the game. We are therefore looking forward to the game against the Americans.”
Defender Fabio Wagner: “The mood in the team is very good and the pace in training is right. Since I've been here, we've worked a lot on the system and the special teams. Playing against a strong team like the USA will be a welcome challenge for us right before the World Cup and will help us continue to come together before the start of the tournament.”
Striker Dominik Kahun: “A few new faces have joined the team, bringing more quality to the team, so that development is going in the right direction. We improved again in the games against Slovakia. The USA are a strong opponent in terms of quality; they again have a lot of college players who will be very motivated. It will definitely be an intensive game in terms of running.”
Striker JJ Peterka: “It’s just cool to be part of the national team again. Especially because I used to play with some of the players and we are now having fun together again in the dressing room and on the ice. Of course it is something special for me to play again in the city where I learned to play ice hockey. Munich is my home and I’m even more looking forward to the game against the USA before the start of the World Cup.”
USA Hockey announced the squad for the 2023 World Cup last week and has been in Munich since Friday. The most well-known players are center forwards Nick Bonino, who has already won the Stanley Cup twice with the Pittsburgh Penguins. JJ Peterka's teammate and seat neighbor Alex Tuch was called into the squad by the Buffalo Sabres, who scored 79 points in 74 games last season. Another well-known name is striker Conor Garland (46 points in 81 games) from the Vancouver Canucks. A total of eight players in the US squad have completed a World Cup.
As usual, there are many talents who want to present themselves at the World Cup, the youngest player being Lane Hutson (19 years old). The coach is 56-year-old David Quinn, who is the full-time head coach of the San José Sharks - and is therefore well known to the German NHL striker Nico Sturm.
