National coach Harold Kreis has announced the squad for the second phase of World Cup preparations. A total of 28 players are on the squad list for the days together in Landshut. The national team will meet on site this Tuesday afternoon. The highlights of the week are the two international matches against Austria. These will take place on Thursday, April 20, 2023, at 19:30 p.m. in Deggendorf and on Saturday, April 22, 2023, at 17 p.m. in Landshut.

NHL striker Nico Sturm (San José Sharks), who is about to make his first senior international appearance after being confirmed, is expected in Landshut at the end of the week. This also applies to defender Dominik Bittner (Grizzlys Wolfsburg), who is traveling for personal reasons. Goalkeeper Dustin Strahlmeier (Grizzlys Wolfsburg) is recovering from a minor illness and will most likely join the national team in phase three.

Our outnumbered and outnumbered formations will also change again, so working with the special teams will be a focus of our time in Landshut. At the same time, we would also like to express our thanks to the players who were there in phase one and who are no longer in the squad. We are looking forward to the next week together and the two international matches against Austria.”

As part of the personal discussions on squad planning for the 2023 World Cup, some national players from the DEL had to cancel their participation in the tournament next May. Korbinian Holzer, Stefan Loibl, Nico Krämmer and Matthias Plachta (all Adler Mannheim) are the DEB definitely not available. National coach Harold Kreis: “Of course we will only take players with us to the World Cup in Tampere who feel 100 percent ready for the task and who are not struck or even injured. We would therefore like to thank you for your openness in the discussions.”
NHL defender Moritz Seider (Detroit Red Wings) will also not be there this time: “Unfortunately he has to miss the upcoming World Cup because he has to fully recover from some injuries after a long, intensive NHL season. These make a World Cup appearance in just a few weeks with a busy schedule simply not possible. We are grateful to Moritz for the open exchange and wish him a good recovery so that he can be fully ready for the next important season with Detroit,” said DEB-Sports director Christian Künast.
In addition to Nico Sturm, JJ Peterka (Buffalo Sabres) has confirmed his commitment to take part in the World Cup. The striker will join the national team at a date yet to be determined. He leads with all other players from North America DEB There are still more discussions, and the playoffs in the NHL and AHL have just begun.
