The Deutscher Eishockey-Bund (DEB) submitted the official application documents for the organization of the 10 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship to the World Association IIHF in Zurich by the deadline on January 2023, 2027. As part of the Bid Questionnaire required by the IIHF DEB all information and documents regarding the required technical and infrastructural requirements.
On the occasion of a possible hosting in Germany, which is specified by the IIHF with two arenas, four possible venues were named as part of the submission of the bid questionnaire. The decision was made for the current project phase DEB as part of a board meeting for the arenas in Düsseldorf, Cologne, Mannheim and Munich as possible venues. The selection followed DEB the recommendation of the service provider commissioned for the tender process, which objectively informs all participating arenas with regard to the core criteria "Arena", “Infrastructure”, "Economics" and “Host City” weighted. The evaluation process for the final selection of venues will be completed until the award at the IIHF Congress in May.
In the next step, the responsible people and committees of the IIHF will examine the submitted documents. A first site visit from the IIHF and a first presentation from the IIHF DEB at the world association in Zurich will take place during the first quarter of 2023.
Alongside Germany, Kazakhstan is applying to host the 2027 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship. The Norwegian association officially withdrew its application a few days ago.
Dr. Peter Merten, DEB-President: “By submitting the Bid Questionnaire, we are taking another step towards our big goal: hosting the 2027 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship in Germany. We are extremely fortunate to have an excellent infrastructure with several modern arenas in our country. The pre-selection of venues was made exclusively based on objective criteria. We are convinced that with the final selection of the two arenas we are submitting the best possible application for Germany. An award would be a strong signal for our association and the further development of German ice hockey!”
Claus Groebner, DEB-Secretary General: “The next important step has been taken! A big “thank you” from me to all the arenas and the World Cup project team. The last few weeks and months have been very intense. However, the race for the award is still open. We will do our best, because the World Cup would be a great opportunity for ice hockey as a whole, but rather a lighthouse project for Germany.”
