U20 national coach Tobias Abstreiter and his team DEB-Young talent selection won their last of three World Cup friendly games in Bouctouche 6-3 against Latvia on Thursday evening. The goals on the German side were scored by Luca Hauf (6th), Ryan Del Monte (37th & 42nd), Nikolaus Heigl (40th), Nils Elten (54th) and Sebastian Cimmerman (58th). Immediately after the game, the team took the bus to Halifax.
Nikita Quapp (Eisbären Berlin / Lausitzer Füchse) in the goal. Right from the start of the game, both teams showed a lot of speed on the ice. The German young talent selection got off to a better start. Already in the sixth minute of the game, Luca Hauf set the first exclamation mark of the game with his goal and made this possible DEBteam took an early 1-0 lead. During the further course of the first 20 minutes, the German U20 national team continued to impose their game on the Latvians for a long time, but the opponent still managed to equalize in the 13th minute through Martins Lavins. Both teams went into the first break with a score of 1-1. In the middle section, the team led by U20 national coach Tobias Abstreiter gained momentum again and clearly dominated the game. Ryan Del Monte (37th) and Nikolaus Heigl (40th) increased the score by two more goals and gave the German team a 3-1 lead. This should continue in the last third. In the 42nd minute, Ryan Del Monte made Germany celebrate again with his second goal. Latvia now tried to find a way back into the game with enormous pressure. They achieved this to a great extent thanks to the quick goals from Roberts Cjunskis (47th) and Martins Lavins (50th). Nevertheless, the German team didn't let themselves be disturbed. In the end, Nils Elten (54th) and Sebastian Cimmerman (58th) finally decided the game for the German U20 national team and made the 6-3 victory perfect with their goals.
The 26 IIHF U2023 World Championship officially starts on December 20th in Halifax and Moncton. The German team will play their first preliminary round game in Group A against Sweden on December 27th at the Scotiabank Centre.
