Yesterday, Sunday evening, the German U20 national team completed the first of three test matches as part of their preparation for the 2023 IIHF U20 World Championship in Halifax and Moncton. The team of U20 national coach Tobias Abstreiter managed to prevail against the Slovakian selection with a clear 5-0 in the Rath Eastlink Community Center (Truro). The goals on the German side were scored by Quirin Bader (7th & 48th), Roman Kechter (19th), Philipp Krening (28th) and Bennet Roßmy (36th).
Both teams started the first third of this encounter with great speed. U20 national coach Tobias Abstreiter relied on Simon Wolf (Red Bull Hockey Juniors) in his team's goal. Just a few minutes after the start of the game, a power play by the German team in the 7th minute offered the first chance to take the lead, which Quirin Bader (Red Bull Hockey Juniors) through the pass by Roman Kechter (Nürnberg Ice Tigers) and Philipp Krening (Red Bull Munich) also used directly. Even in a double-numbered situation, the German team impressed with a strong performance on the ice and gave the Slovaks no opportunity to get the puck behind Simon Wolf's goal line. Shortly before the end of the first period, Roman Kechter built for them DEB-Young talent selection took the lead again and increased it to 19:2 from the German perspective in the 0th minute. Even after the first break, the team around U20 national coach Tobias Abstreiter managed to build on this strong performance from the beginning. Philipp Krening, who had already assisted on the first two goals, scored eight minutes into the third period to make it 3:0 for the German U20 national team. The Slovakians tried to score a goal by putting a lot of pressure on the German goal, but had to go to the penalty box twice. The German team did not let this double majority go to waste and Bennet Roßmy (Eisbären Berlin) in the 36th minute the fourth goal of the evening for the DEB-Team. During the middle period, the German young talent selection was able to record two more hits on the scoreboard from their total of 19 shots on the Slovakian goal. Meanwhile, Simon Wolf continued to impress with the opponent's 22 shots. During the last 20 minutes of the game, Slovakia continued to have problems converting their chances. Quirin Bader, on the other hand, took advantage of the opportunity again in the 48th minute and scored to make it 5-0 from a German perspective.
On Tuesday, December 20, 2022, the German U20 national team will meet their neighbors from Austria in the second test match of the World Cup preparations in Antigonish.
