The German U20 national team will compete in the preparation phase for the upcoming 13 IIHF World Junior Championship from December 23th to 2022rd, 2023 in Antigonish (December 26th, 2022 to January 05th, 2023 in Halifax and Moncton). U20 national coach Tobias Abstreiter nominated three goalkeepers, eight defenders and 15 strikers for the measure.
The 26-man squad includes 18 young talent players who already took part in the 4-nation tournament in Monthey (Switzerland) at the beginning of November. In addition, there is goalkeeper Nikita Quapp (Eisbären Berlin/Lausitzer Füchse), defense attorneys Rayan Bettahar (Eisbären Berlin) and Phillip Sinn (Red Bull Hockey Juniors/EHC Red Bull München) and the striker Julian Lutz (EHC Red Bull München), Thomas Heigl (Red Bull Hockey Juniors), Luca Hauf (Edmonton Oil Kings), Haakon Hänelt (Olympiques de Gatineau) and Ryan Del Monte (London Knights). The DEB-Young talent selection will travel to Canada on December 13, 2022 to complete the first training measures at the Charles V Keating Centre, Antigonish. On the evening of December 20 and December 22, 2022, the German team will face the teams from Austria and Latvia in two preparation games. The coaching team led by U20 national coach Tobias Abstreiter will then announce their final squad for the tournament in Halifax. The German U20 national team will then prepare for the Junior World Championships at the Scotiabank Centre from December 24, 2022.
U20 national coach Tobias Abstreiter: “For me, squad selection is always about finding the best players for the World Cup and then scoring on the small ice in such a way that each of them is skating and physically fit. In the future, it is of course also important to integrate the younger generation, which is why we will now take younger players with us compared to the last measure. We will go through several areas of the system in preparation, especially focusing on those that are required of the players on the smaller ice surface. These include the classic points such as building up under pressure, playing with the disc in the defensive zone and special teams. First and foremost, it is always important for us to stay in the top division.”
DEB-Sports director Christian Künast: “The IIHF U20 World Championship is the highest international stage in ice hockey for a young player. The stars of tomorrow from a wide variety of nations meet here. Some already have significant roles in their clubs.”
