In the opening minutes, both teams sorted themselves out. Little by little, the German team gained more possession of the puck and thus also had their first good moves in the Danish offensive zone. Germany took the deserved lead through Marc Michaelis (16th minute), whose pass was decisively deflected by a Danish defender. But before the first break (19th minute), Anders Koch responded for his team with the equalizer.
In the second half it remained the expected close game. The Danes went against them through Nicolai Meyer (26th) shortly before the end of the first penalty time DEB-Selection in the lead. The German team then increased the tempo again and consequently equalized. Daniel Schmölz (33') was cleared in an exemplary manner and pushed the puck past the stumbling Danish goalie. Even after that, Germany stayed on the trigger and could have taken the lead again.
At the end of the game both teams put a lot of pressure on and there were good chances to score on both sides, but without a successful finish. In the last three minutes of the game, a penalty gave the German men's national team the chance to decide the game before the end of regular time. But Danish goalkeeper Georg Sørensen kept his team in the game. Only in extra time did he succeed DEB-Selection to secure victory in this encounter with another goal from Daniel Schmölz.
Voices about the game
National coach Toni Söderholm: "We played with fresh momentum and a lot of tempo. The boys fought very hard. It took us a while to get into the game, but after the opening minutes of the first and second thirds the game was better. In my opinion, every player took responsibility and that makes me happy.
Striker Daniel Schmölz: "Except in the early stages of the second period when the Danes were a little better, we dominated the game most of the time and deserved to win in the end. Everyone is trying to do their best here, whether young or old. Of course, as an experienced player you can pass something on. But I still think that everyone did a good job across the board and deserved to be here."
Defender Jan Luca Sennhenn: “It was a lot of fun and of course a great honor to be able to play here. In the end we successfully got the victory. The ice hockey game for the national team is a little different than in the league. Of course you have to get used to it. But I think that will subside as the tournament progresses. It's only a stone's throw from Cologne to Krefeld, which makes it even nicer that the family was there too.
