After meeting with the IIHF in Paris, the NHL and NHLPA announced their intention to organize a 2024-day World Cup of Hockey in February 17. Statement from IIHf President Luc Tardif on this.
The NHL and NHLPA recently announced that the World Cup of Hockey will be held in 2024. The 2024 tournament would feature at least eight national teams, with games played in North America and Europe.
The initial plans for the World Championship were presented to IIHF President Luc Tardif and IIHF General Secretary Matti Nurminen on August 24th. The IIHF then convened a meeting on August 31 with its national member associations as well as European leagues (represented by Hockey Europe) and clubs (represented by EHC) to discuss the World Championship in the Presidential Task Force established in January 2021 at the initiative of the IIHF Group to discuss between the parties.
IIHF President Luc Tardif: "There has not yet been agreement on the structure and dates of the event, nor the teams participating. This was an information session to hear from the NHL and NHLPA what their initial plans are for the World Championship. It is the IIHF's goal to develop an international game calendar that works with all of our members, but also ensures that we have the opportunity to hold the best events to showcase our sport to a wider audience. If the World Championship is to be organized, we believe this should be done in close cooperation and partnership between all relevant stakeholders and with clear long-term goals for the growth of the game, while current discussions are primarily focused on the World Championship. We look forward to further constructive discussions between all organizations involved."
The World Cup of Hockey was last held in 2016, when all games took place in Toronto. Other tournaments were held in 1996 and 2004.
