Women's national coach Thomas Schädler and his coaching team have made the final personnel decisions and nominated the squad of the German women's national ice hockey team for the 2022 IIHF Women's Ice Hockey World Championship in Denmark. After arriving on Sunday, the team will face another preparation phase with intensive training sessions and another test match. Before the women's national team faces the selection from Hungary in the opening match on August 25th (15:30 p.m.), the team will play a test match against the Czech Republic on August 23rd (15:30 p.m.). In the further course of the tournament in preliminary round group B, the German women's national team will face Sweden (Aug. 27th | 15:30 p.m.), the Czech Republic (Aug. 29th | 15:30 p.m.) and the hosts from Denmark (Aug. 30th | 19:30 p.m.). The teams from Japan, Canada, USA, Finland and Switzerland are active in group A.
The women's national team won both test matches in Füssen against the Hungarian team. The first game on Thursday was won 1-0. Bernadette Karpf scored the decisive goal in the 16th minute. Yesterday's test match was able to DEB-Selection won 2:1 thanks to goals from Katharina Jobst-Smith and Theresa Wagner (third 1:1, 2nd third 1:0, 3rd third 0:0). “It was noticeable that the players had a break of almost nine months without any international competition. That's why the two test matches against Hungary were very good for us. But I don't want to overestimate the two victories in the test matches. The selection from Hungary is a difficult team to play against,” explains Thomas Schädler and continues: “We are well prepared, but we have to deliver our performance again next Thursday so that we can win the game.”
The women's team of the Deutscher Eishockey-Bund (DEB) will travel to Denmark with 23 players tomorrow, Sunday. “The final squad selection wasn’t easy for us. All the players worked very well, so it wasn't an easy decision for us as a coaching team. That’s why I would especially like to thank the players who were eliminated for their commitment,” says Thomas Schädler. Looking back on the preparation and looking forward to the World Cup, defender Daria Gleißner says: “We prepared intensively for the World Cup here in Füssen and came together as a team. The mood in the team is good and we are looking forward to going to Denmark tomorrow.”
