The will meet on Sunday, August 14, 2022 DEBThe German women's team is meeting at the Federal Performance Center in Füssen to prepare for the 25th IIHF Women's Ice Hockey World Championship, which will take place in Denmark from August 4 to September 24. In Group B, the German team will face the hosts from Denmark, Hungary, Sweden and the Czech Republic. Group A includes teams from Japan, Canada, the USA, Finland and Switzerland.
The squad nominated for preparation by women's national coach Thomas Schädler will, in addition to several training sessions, play two preparatory games against the Hungarian selection in Füssen. The two preparatory games will take place on Thursday, August 18th (16:00 p.m.) and Friday, August 19th (19:00 p.m.) in the Federal Training Center. The following Sunday morning the team will head to Denmark. In the first game of the World Cup, the women's national team will face a familiar opponent on August 25th (15:30 p.m.). “We had already scheduled the two agreed preparatory games in Füssen against Hungary before the IIHF announced the game plan,” explains Christian Künast, DEB-Sports director, the direct clash in the first game at the World Cup.
Women's national coach Thomas Schädler's focus for the days in Füssen is, in addition to the final squad selection and further growing together of the team, primarily on tactical measures. “In the next few days we will primarily continue to work on our tactical system and the implementation of our game plan. The two games against Hungary will certainly help us. The team from Hungary is a technically skilled team with great players. There will definitely be close games from which we can gain a lot,” says Thomas Schädler.
After a long injury break, Carina Strobel and Daria Gleißner, both from ECDC Memmingen, are back in the German women's national team squad. “We are pleased that both of them are back and can use their experience to ensure further stability in the defense,” says Thomas Schädler and continues: “Overall, our squad is very balanced. We have experienced players on board and young players who want to get involved. Nevertheless, it is the first major tournament for the rejuvenated team and it is clear to us that we have to leave opponents behind us in order to achieve our goal of reaching the quarter-finals.” Before the DEB-Women's selection enters the World Cup and completes its preparation, it will play a final preparation game against the team from the Czech Republic in Denmark on August 23rd (15:30 p.m.).
