Defender of the German national ice hockey team named the best newcomer in the North American professional league NHL
Detroit Red Wings defenseman Moritz Seider was awarded the National Hockey League (NHL) Calder Memorial Trophy last night. This award goes to the player who was the most competent rookie in the NHL during the previous 2021-22 season. Seider received 170 of 195 votes in the election of North American journalists organized in the Professional Hockey Writers Association (PHWA).
The national defender, who was born in Zell an der Mosel, grew up in Erfurt and learned the ice hockey basics and became a professional in Mannheim, scored 82 goals and recorded 7 assists in his 43 games in the main round of the NHL. He was drafted by Detroit in the first round of the 2019 NHL Draft. After the NHL season, Seider played in the World Cup in Finland with the German national team and was involved in the best World Cup group phase ever with 2 goals and 5 assists.
The whole of ice hockey Germany is happy with Mo about this great award!
Dr. Peter Merten, President Deutscher Eishockey-Bund e.V.: "We are very proud that Moritz Seider was the first German to be awarded the Calder Trophy at the age of 21. His talent, great ambition and the support from German ice hockey have made him one of the best defenders in the world and an outstanding player."
Christian Künast, sports director Deutscher Eishockey-Bund e.V.: "Despite his young age, Moritz Seider has already become a great personality. He is a player who shapes every game and can give every team in the world a face."
Toni Söderholm, national coach: "Moritz has shown tremendous development again this year. There are few secrets when you follow his development. First of all, he is very ambitious as a person, he works very hard for what he wants to achieve and stays focused. He showed a remarkable presence in his first year and played strongly all year. I am of course very happy for Moritz, he has made all of ice hockey in Germany proud."
