After five joint ice training sessions, the German national ice hockey team will play its first preparation game for the 2022 Ice Hockey World Cup this afternoon. The Czech host team will welcome national coach Toni Söderholm's team in the Rocknet Arena in Chomutov. The puck for today's game will be thrown in at 17 p.m. - SPORT1 and MagentaSport will broadcast live. The second comparison follows on Friday afternoon (April 15th, 15 p.m., live on MagentaSport).
Yesterday, Wednesday, another national team debutant joined the team. Krefeld's Maciej Rutkowski will play his first game in the senior national team today. Tomorrow, Friday, the newly crowned ICE Hockey League champion Danjo Leonhardt will also reinforce the team. Like Rutkowski, the Salzburg native was part of the U20 national team at the last Junior World Championships in Canada. Julian Napravnik, on the other hand, will not play for the national team for the time being. The team, with a total of ten newcomers, is led by captains Daniel Pietta, Thorsten Ankert and Fabio Wagner.
National coach Toni Söderholm: “The focus in the training sessions was playing without a disc. We want to do well in our own zone. We want to see a team tonight that works together and sees the things in the game that we talked about during the week.”
The Czech selection and the German team last met in preparation for the 2021 World Cup. The Czech Republic won 5:4 and 4:1 in Nuremberg. The last German victory against the Czechs was a 7:4 on April 22, 2017 in preparation for the World Cup. Today's hosts have already played two test matches in preparation for the World Cup and beat Austria 4:1 and 5:1.
