Almost three weeks before the start of the 2021 IIHF U20 World Championship in Canada, national coach Tobias Abstreiter has nominated a 27-man squad for the World Championship preparation. The tournament will take place from Sunday, December 26, 2021 to Wednesday, January 5, 2022 at Rogers Place (Group A) and WP Centrium (Group B). On Monday, December 13, the DEB-Selection at the Federal Performance Center in Füssen to prepare for the sporting highlight.
The U20 team will complete two training sessions in Allgäu before flying to Edmonton by charter on December 15th. Here the team goes through a two-day quarantine before they can continue the final preparation for the U20 World Cup. On December 26, 2021, at 12:00 p.m. local time (20:00 p.m. CET) live on MagentaSport, the German U20 team will open the IIHF U20 World Championships with the game against the young talent team from Finland. In the further course of the preliminary round group A, the DEB-Young Talent also in the Czech Republic (27.12.), Canada (29.12.) and Austria (31.12.).
John-Jason Peterka (Rochester Americans) and Lukas Reichel (Rockford IceHogs) join after consultation with the DEB not for the U20 national team. Both strikers are currently impressing with strong performances in the AHL and are hoping to make the jump to the NHL. Luca Münzenberger (University of Vermont), who was drafted 90th overall by the Edmonton Oilers in the third round in the summer, adds this DEBselection after their arrival in Canada.
U20 national coach Tobi Abstreiter: “We have put together a good squad. A third of the team has already gained experience from the last World Cup, which will be very important for us. In addition to the ten training sessions in Edmonton, we will also have the opportunity to play two test matches against Russia and Switzerland before we finally start the tournament against Finland on Boxing Day.”
