The schedule for the IIHF U18 World Championship in Germany at the end of April/beginning of May 2022 has been set. The tournament with ten national teams will last eleven days. The venues are the recently modernized ice stadium on Gutenbergweg in Landshut, which was reopened last weekend, and the erdgas schwaben arena in Kaufbeuren.
The U18 Junior World Championships will open with the neighborhood duel between the Olympic athletes from Russia and the team from Belarus on April 21, 2022 at 15 p.m. in Landshut. This means that one of the biggest stars of the tournament, Matvei Michkov, will also be in action. The now 16-year-old striker (born December 09.12.2004, XNUMX) already plays in the Continental Hockey League (KHL) for SKA St. Petersburg and was the outstanding player at last year's tournament in Texas with twelve goals in seven games.
Defending champion Canada will then take action on the evening of the first day. In the North American prestige duel, the Canadians will face Team USA. The Americans have been the dominant nation with ten gold medals since the first U18 World Championship in 1999 in Füssen and Kaufbeuren. Finland and Canada have each won four times.
The host German team will take part in the action on the second day of the tournament (April 22, 2022). Their opponent will then be the Belarusian selection at 15 p.m. in Landshut. A total of 31 games will be played in the Allgäu and Lower Bavaria until the final.
DEB-Sports director Christian Künast: "This will be a great ice hockey festival in two absolute strongholds of German ice hockey. Countless talents have been developed in Landshut and Kaufbeuren over the past decades. Now international talents are coming to us to determine the best nation. The level of the Junior World Championships has recently risen steadily. I can only recommend to every ice hockey fan not to miss the chance to watch these games."
