The German women's national team played its IIHF World Championship quarter-final in Calgary, Canada, on the night of Saturday to Sunday. The team of women's national coach Thomas Schädler ultimately lost to the Canadian selection 0:7 (0:3, 0:2, 0:2) and thus missed out on a place in the semi-finals. On Sunday at 13 p.m. local time (21 p.m. German time), the German team will play against Russia again for positions five to eight.
Unfortunately, the German Ice Hockey Federation's selection was missing strikers Laura Kluge, Sonja Weidenfelder and Nina Christof as well as defender Carina Strobel in the match against Canada due to injury. So the team of national coach Thomas Schädler started with seven defensive and nine offensive players on the ice.
As expected, Canada started the match with a lot of pressure and the team of head coach Troy Ryan scored the first goal in the 2nd minute to take a 1-0 lead. Melodie Daoust was able to secure the puck in the German third and pass it directly to Ashton Bell's stick to steer it past the German goalkeeper Franziska Albl. Just a few minutes later, the Canadian team doubled the lead through Natalie Spooner (4th minute). DEBThe selection tried to get from their own zone into the Canadian zone with every puck they won. Shortly after the end of a shorthanded game for the German team, Brianne Jenner was able to increase Canada's score to 16-3 in the 0th minute.
The strength of the Canadian selection was also clearly noticeable in the second third. Goalkeeper Franziska Albl defused dangerous attacks several times, but had to reach behind herself again in the 29th minute of the game. The German team had two power play opportunities in the middle period, but unfortunately these did not lead to a dangerous scoring opportunity. Just six minutes later, Marie-Philip Poulin enabled the Canadian team to celebrate another goal to make it 5-0.
In the final section, national coach Thomas Schädler substituted goalkeeper Sandra Abstreiter, who played her first World Cup game to date. The German team tried to block every Canadian shot and keep the puck out of their own third. Unfortunately, German striker Lena Düsterhöft received a 5+20 minute disciplinary penalty right at the start of the final third and was unable to do so DEB-Team no longer help. The hosts took advantage of this, increased the score on the board two more times and secured their place in the semi-finals.
Yvonne Rothemund was voted the best German player of the match.
National coach Thomas Schädler: “We knew it would be a very difficult game against the Canadians today. However, I have to take my hat off to my team's performance. The commitment and will of the players was really commendable. They threw themselves into the shots and gave it their all.”
Defense attorney Anna Reich: “I am more than proud of our team. We showed heart today and gave everything on the ice. Everyone blocked the opponent's shots and played their best game. We also wanted to fight for the players who couldn’t be there today.”
Striker Julia Zorn: "Despite the clear result today, we have nothing to reproach ourselves for. Of course, we have to draw the right conclusions for the future. We want to finish in the top group and we still have the opportunity to do so tomorrow with the placement game against Russia. We definitely want to win this game to keep our chance of fifth place."
The German women's national team will be playing again tomorrow. In the WinSports Arena, women's national coach Thomas Schädler's team will face Russia in the placement game for places five to eight from 13 p.m. (21 p.m. German time).
