Final group game for the German women's national team at the 2021 IIHF World Championship in Canada: The team of national coach Thomas Schädler lost 1:2 (1:0, 0:2, 0:0) to their opponents from Japan last night in their last preliminary round game. The selection of the Deutscher Eishockey-Bund thus finished the preliminary round of Group B in third place and will now face the team from Canada in the quarterfinals. The goal on the side of the DEBteam scored Kerstin Spielberger.
Both teams started the first third of the game evenly. National coach Thomas Schädler's selection had a few good chances in the power play, but without a goal. With more time in the offensive third, the German team's extensive follow-up work finally paid off and Kerstin Spielberger gave Germany the lead in the 15th minute.
In the middle section, the Japanese got back into the game quicker and created a good scoring opportunity right from the start, which they were ultimately able to use with a face-off play to equalize 1-1 through Hanau Kubo. The German women's national team held up in the penalty killing with a lot of shot blocks in order to be able to keep the score. However, as time went on, Japan had a much greater share of the game and so Hikaru Yamashita (30th minute) was able to single-handedly put her team in the lead. The DEB-Selection still had a few good opportunities to equalize, but the team still had to go into the second half with a one-goal deficit.
The last 20 minutes of the match between Japan and Germany were, as at the beginning, evenly balanced on both sides. The Japanese continued to put pressure on the German team, but goalkeeper Jennifer Harss was able to parry the opponents' chances to score. He succeeded until the end DEB-Selection no longer has to fight back into the third of the Japanese and thus save the opposing team's victory over time.
Julia Zorn was named the best player of the game.
National coach Tom Schädler: "In my opinion, we played really well in the first half of the game. From the second third onwards, the Japanese didn't make it easy for us and put enormous pressure on us. Our team had some good chances, which we unfortunately just didn't take advantage of in the end. Nevertheless, the team fought on until the end. We're trying to use tomorrow to regenerate and recharge our batteries. There's another ice session planned, which we obviously want to use with an eye on the game against Canada. No matter who we play against, we always want to win."
Striker Nicola Eisenschmid: “The Japanese put a lot of pressure on us. Unfortunately, we conceded two goals in quick succession and lost our balance. We tried to get the structure back. I don’t think we ever stopped playing, but in the end it just wasn’t enough.”
Striker Marie Delarbre: "We now face Canada in the quarter-finals. They are obviously one of the top nations. We will try everything to win this match. Anything is possible."
With a day of regeneration before the knockout phase of the tournament, the women's national team will face the Canadian selection tomorrow, Saturday, August 28, 2021, who secured first place in Group A with four wins in the preliminary round. The game in the WinSports Arena starts at 17:00 p.m. (01:00 a.m. + 1 German time). This game will also be live and free of charge www.thefan.fm.de transfer.
