Almost two months before the Women's World Cup in Canada, the new women's national coach Thomas Schädler is bringing the women's national team together for the first training course of the new 2021/22 season. The 53-year-old has invited three goalkeepers, ten defenders and 15 strikers to the event at the national base in Füssen. The squad consists mainly of established national players. For Schädler, it is the first training course in his new role, during which eight training sessions will be completed on the ice over the course of five days.
The summer course will take place from June 26th to 30th and is a first important indication with a view to the title fights in Calgary from August 20th to 31st. In addition, the training camp generally serves to get you in the mood for the important coming months with the World Cup, which has been moved from spring to summer, and the Olympic qualifying tournament in November in Füssen. Schädler was appointed women's national coach in May after previously serving as an assistant coach at the DEB-Women and, among other things, looked after the U16 national team.
Women’s national coach Thomas Schädler: “The focus of this course is entirely on the World Cup. The players have been in summer training for a good month, and now they're going out on the ice for five days for the first time. Even though I was already there as an assistant coach, everything is still quite new for me. We still have to get to know each other, find out the team, how I handle everything and then find a common path towards Calgary. There are players who are eligible for the World Cup, now we have to use the time, there is no time for experiments. We won't reinvent everything tactically, but we will add some accents. We are also looking at athletic development, but the focus will be on ice training. I hope for a good start and no injuries. We will continue to act very cautiously with regard to the corona pandemic.”
