The German national ice hockey team has received further reinforcements for the IIHF World Championships in 2021. Defender Moritz Seider traveled directly to the team from Sweden and was on the ice with a training group from national coach Toni Söderholm's team on Thursday. The 20-year-old recently played in the play-off final with Rögle BK, which was lost 1-4 after games against the Växjö Lakers. Seider was loaned to the Swedish top league (SHL) by the NHL club Detroit Red Wings for this season and is now facing his second World Championship after the 2019 tournament in Slovakia.
Seider had a strong season in Sweden and was voted rookie of the year. In addition, the former Mannheim player was also one of the best defenders in the league with 28 scorer points (7 goals and 21 assists) in 41 games in the main round and played his part in the team's finals at Rögle in the play-offs. Seider had already set his sights on participating in the World Cup months ago and clearly expressed his willingness. Seider also fulfilled the IIHF test requirements for immediate entry into the final preparation phase in Germany.
National coach Toni Söderholm: “We are getting a player who has had a very convincing season. Moritz made very good use of his time in Sweden to take the next steps in his development. He retained the trust of his coaches in all important game situations and repaid this with strong performances. We are pleased that he was able to join the team before departure and take part in training sessions with us.”
