After a thrilling fight, the Hannover Scorpions won the championship title Oberliga Nord secured. In a duel that constantly swayed back and forth and was extremely goal-rich, they prevailed Niedersachsen 9:6 (0:1, 4:3, 5:2) against Herner EV and narrowly won the best-of-three series. The Scorpions, led by five-time goalscorer Patrick Schmid, crowned their strong 2020/21 season in an exciting and turbulent decisive third game of the play-off final in Mellendorf and are now reaching for even higher goals in the big league showdown of the title holders from North and South. The first duel in the “best of five” mode between the Scorpions and the Selber Wölfen, the champions from the south, takes place on Friday. All final games can be seen live on SpradeTV.
On Tuesday evening, Herne initially took the lead through Nils Liesegang (14th), before Hannover temporarily turned the game around with goals from Christoph Koziol (21st) and, for the first time, Schmid (24th). However, Herne responded with goals from Marcus Marsall (28th), again Liesegang (30th) and Patrick Asselin (33rd) and seemed to have built up a reassuring lead. But again Schmid (39th) and Mario Valery Trabucco (40th) restored the tie with a double strike.
In the final section, Richard Mueller (41') scored for Herne, Schmid (49') for Hannover scored third and Asselin (50') scored again for the guests. The Scorpions and especially Schmid remain unimpressed, the 33-year-old made it 6:6 a little later (54th). Hannover then made a furious final spurt and, thanks to Andre Reiss (59th), Schmid for the fifth time just 29 seconds later and Julian Airich (60th), made everything clear against a team from Herne that was understandably frustrated in the end and was also hoping for a championship coup was very close.
DEB-League leader Markus Schubert: “Congratulations to the Hannover Scorpions. It was an incredibly close and exciting final series, which we had hoped and expected. This is particularly evident in the fact that two of the three games had to go into overtime and the decisive game also had numerous twists and turns and an incredible finish. Both teams showed a very high league level with enormous intensity and technically very impressive actions. Now we are looking forward to the big showdown, where after more than two years we will finally be able to play against a league champion and the newcomer to the DEL2 again.”
