With three goalkeepers, nine defensemen and 13 forwards, the German national ice hockey team is tackling phase two of preparation for the 2021 IIHF World Championships in Riga, Latvia (May 21 to June 6). National coach Toni Söderholm's team will meet in Nuremberg from Tuesday, where further intensive training sessions will take place on Thursday (18 p.m./live and free on MagentaSport; live on SPORT1) and Saturday (13.30 p.m./live and free on MagentaSport; highlights on SPORT1 ) the first two home international games decide on the measure.
DEB-Coach Söderholm appointed nine new players to the selection of the Deutscher Eishockey-Bund compared to the previous week. In addition to Moritz Müller and his teammate Frederik Tiffels (both Kölner Haie) these are goalkeeper Andreas Jenike (Iserlohn Roosters), Marcel Brandt and Andreas Eder (both Straubing Tigers), John Jason Peterka, Maximilian Kastner and Justin Schütz (all Red Bull Munich) as well as veteran Korbinian Holzer (Awtomobilist Yekaterinburg/KHL). Peterka is about to make his international debut, while defender Müller has the most international experience with 154 appearances to date.
Söderholm and his coaching team will complete four training sessions with the team in Nuremberg. All players and supervisors arrive at the course having tested negative and will continue to follow a daily Corona testing cycle. The World Cup preparations will continue again in Nuremberg the following week, followed by the final two World Cup test matches against Belarus (May 7th and 8th/live and free on MagentaSport; live on SPORT1). The final preparation phase before the World Cup tournament begins on May 11th.
National coach Toni Söderholm: “The players we had to say goodbye worked very hard over the last week and all together made a good impression. We would like to thank them for their efforts; they are all still on call for the time being. Now we have some very experienced players coming to us who will give the team further support and stability - but also very talented young players who can deservedly present themselves and prove themselves. Goalkeeper Andreas Jenike also earned a place in the PENNY DEL with strong performances. We have now planned the coming week and want to take the next tactical steps in the coming days and play two convincing games against the Czech team.”
