The participants of the Deutschland CupIn 2020 it is clear that the first major ice hockey event of the season can take place. This year, the German national ice hockey team of national coach Toni Söderholm will face the upcoming World Cup hosts Latvia and one DEB-Make a perspective selection of the top team in Beijing. After the corona-related cancellations by Norway, Slovakia, Switzerland and Russia, the home tournament of the Deutscher Eishockey-Bund will be held from November 5th to 8th in the Yayla Arena in Krefeld in a three-nation format instead of the usual four-nation mode.
There will now be a game on each of the tournament days. Initially, the three teams will play in an “everyone against everyone” mode, then the two teams with the highest points will duel in a final game on Sunday. Due to the situation in the corona pandemic, the event is currently only approved without an audience, but all Magenta Sport games and the games on Thursday and Saturday will also be broadcast live by Sport1.
In terms of sport, the tournament is becoming even more important in the current situation, not only as a way to determine where we stand, but also as an important competitive test with a view to the 2021 World Cup and the 2022 Olympic Games. After their arrival, all teams will be more or less isolated from the outside world and in commute between the hotel and the arena in a kind of team bubble. The necessary measures also include that all active members and team members of the teams will arrive with a current negative corona test, which must not be older than 48 hours.
DEB-President Franz Reindl: “I think we made the best of the situation. My thanks to everyone involved for this. Especially in these difficult times, it is extremely important for our sport and the national teams to present and compete under international competition conditions. In Latvia, our national team has a team on equal footing as opponents, but our young top talents will certainly not make it easy for either team to get to the final, which will be held for the first time, on Sunday. It will be a challenging time for everyone involved, but I’m really looking forward to live ice hockey.”
Paul Keusch, Managing Director of Seidenweberhaus GmbH: “Play ice hockey despite Corona! What was not possible for a long time can now finally happen. Even without an audience, we are happy DEB to be able to welcome our national team back to the Yayla Arena.”
