Marcel Noebels was one of the silver heroes of Pyeongchang, was recently voted Player of the Year for the canceled DEL season - and still has a lot planned. The striker Eisbären Berlin sees that Deutscher Eishockey-Bund (DEB) well prepared for the future and is already looking forward to the time after the corona pandemic. “In German ice hockey everyone is swimming on the same wave, then it’s fun as a player and that’s why we’re successful,” says Noebels in an interview with DEB (for video), in which the 28-year-old touches on some of his career stages.
Noebels not only chats about the beginnings of his career, his very different experiences in North America are also part of this cross-section. “I am happy with what I have achieved,” says the electedBerlinHe was drafted by the Philadelphia Flyers in 2011. He only found limited sporting happiness overseas, but Noebels is valued all the more by the Eisbären and the national team. “Somehow it always worked: Marcel and Berlin“, he emphasizes and says about the development of the DEB-Selection: “Success didn’t happen overnight, we worked for it and can go into the games with a lot of pride and self-confidence.”
Noebels started out as a footballer, but ice hockey soon became more fascinating. About Krefeld, Berlin and Mannheim, as a junior, his path took him to North America for the first time, where he not only experienced warm host families, but also gained a number of lasting impressions. “It was something special to see how much value ice hockey has there,” says Noebels, who finally returned to Germany in 2014 after two years in the AHL and led the attack on the DEL in the new season together with Eisbären newcomer Matthias Niederberger title wants to start. “He is a huge reinforcement,” says Noebels about his national team colleague.
