The third game day of the 2020 IIHF Ice Hockey U18 Women's World Championship Div. IA had another success in store for the German national team. The team led by U18 national coach Franziska Busch defeated Hungary 2-1 after a penalty shootout.
In the first third of the game, both teams immediately showed a concentrated performance on equal terms and started the game well. Both Germany and Hungary had good chances to score, but they could not convert them. In particular, the performance of the goalkeepers – Sofie Disl in the German goal and Zsofia Toth on the Hungarian side – contributed significantly to the score being 0-0 at the first break.
The second half of the game also started at a high pace and offered the first chances straight away. In the 26th minute of the game, Jennifer Miller finally scored the well-deserved goal to make it 1-0 for the German team after a pass from Nina Christof and Svenja Voigt. However, both teams were unable to use the remaining time in the middle period to score any more goals.
The final third began with a power play for the Hungarians, which had no consequences for the German selection. As a result, it failed DEB-Selection again and again to Hungary's goalkeeper Toth. In the 54th minute of the game, the Hungarian team finally equalized to make it 1-1 through Regina Metzler. It was only in the penalty shootout and there after the 26th penalty that the game was finally decided; once again it was Jennifer Miller who was successful.
Tomorrow the German selection will face France in their fourth game of the tournament at the Federal Training Center in Füssen at 20:00 p.m.
Franziska Busch, U18 women’s national coach: “Today was the expected difficult and close game, but we took the fight well and didn't let the late equalizer put us off balance. In the end we won the penalty shootout. Ultimately, it’s the third win in the third game that counts.”
