Moritz Seider is considered one of the hopes for the future of German ice hockey. Excited at just 18 years olde he the Fans both nationally and internationally. The exceptional talent showed his skills and ambitions to be among the best very early on.
Seider went through the Young Talent program at EHC Erfurt until the summer of 2015, where he played in the U12 squad as a 2013-year-old in the 2014/16 season and thus in the student Bundesliga. Over two seasons he scored more than one point per game and was able to attract attention for the first time (43 appearances/57 points). Accordingly, in 2015 he made the jump to the Jungadler Mannheim as a defender. Moritz Seider was also able to shine there with a total of 40 points from 48 games. In the U19, at just 15 years old, he continued in the German Young Talent League, where he was able to collect 26 points in 13 games and contributed a large part to the DNL championship with his defensive behavior. In 2017 he also took part in an international tournament for the first time, the IIHF U18 Ice Hockey World Championship Division IA in Slovakia.
In the 2017/2018 season, Seider continued to play in the U19. Due to his performance, he signed his first professional contract in Mannheim in April 2018 and was allowed to play four games for the men by the end of the season. He also participated in the 2018 IIHF U20 Ice Hockey World Championship Division IA in France and the IIHF U18 Ice Hockey World Championship in Latvia, where the team achieved second place and he was named the tournament's best defensive player. At just 17 years old, he became a regular player in the 2018/19 season Adler Mannheim to mature and win the DEL championship with his team. At the end of the season, the now 18-year-old was also named “Rookie of the Season”.
Seider also celebrated great success with the German U2018 team in the 19/20 season. His team's group victory at the 2019 IIHF U20 Ice Hockey World Championship Division IA in December 2018 in Füssen at home - and thus promotion back to the top division - completed an unforgettable season for Seider. With seven scorer points, the defensive player, who was also team captain, played a significant role in the success of the U20 national team and was able to attract the attention of various scouts. Among other things, he was the highest-scoring defender and had the best plus/minus balance. He also received the award for best defender of the tournament.
On May 7, 2019, Seider made his World Cup debut for the men's national team and scored his first goal as the youngest defender to do so. Following the tournament, Moritz Seider was drafted sixth overall by the Detroit Red Wings in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft, where he received an entry-level contract in July 2019. In the upcoming 2019/20 season, Seider will initially prove himself in the Red Wings' farm team - the Grand Rapids Griffins - in the AHL. Nevertheless, all doors in the strongest ice hockey league in the world will most likely be open to him in the foreseeable future.
