The German national team suffered its first defeat in the fifth game of the 2019 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship. The team of national coach Toni Söderholm lost to Canada in the Steel Arena with 1:8 (0:2, 1:2, 0:4).
In the duel against the world number one, national coach Toni Söderholm had to do without goalkeeper Philipp Grubauer and defender Moritz Seider, for whom it would have been too early to play. Dennis Reul returned to the squad in defense, while striker Stefan Loibl remained out as a surplus player.
Just over two minutes had been played when Canada was awarded a penalty against the DEB-Selection used to take the lead through Thomas Chabot. But the German team didn't let themselves be shocked by the early deficit and used some nice combinations to get dangerously in front of the Canadian goal. Especially in this good phase DEB-Selection, the Canadians made it 2-0 through Mark Stone, who quickly maneuvered a deflected shot into the goal. Here too, Niklas Treutle had no chance to defend in the German goal.
In the second period it was also a power-play goal by Mark Stone (27th) that put the German team behind. The Canadians subsequently had further good opportunities to score, which Niklas Treutle knew how to thwart. The German bench celebrated for the first time in the 39th minute of the game when Yasin Ehliz scored the goal and thus reduced the deficit. However, 48 seconds later the Canadians scored again - again through Mark Stone with his third goal of the evening.
Anthony Mantha with a brace (44th and 45th) and Sam Reinhart increased the score to 7:1 within three minutes in the final period. The German team tried to score more goals, but was unable to score another goal. The Canadians, who were outnumbered by Anthony Cirelli (54'), were different.
For the DEB-Selection will continue tomorrow afternoon. Then the German team meets the USA. The game starts at 16.15:1 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on SPORTXNUMX.
Toni Söderholm, national coach: “Today we weren’t good enough at the little things. For example, after our goal, we had a small mental hole in our transition, which the Canadians coldly took advantage of to concede. Things like this need to be worked on in order to be successful again in the coming encounters. We have to look forward and mentally prepare ourselves for the coming opponents. The good thing is that we can continue playing tomorrow and show our better side.”
