NHL goalkeeper arrives in Kosice on Sunday / Söderholm: “Philip’s confirmation is a very good thing for us at all levels.”
National coach Toni Söderholm can rely on goalkeeper Philipp Grubauer at the 2019 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship in Slovakia. The 27-year-old goalie from the NHL club Colorado Avalanche will arrive in Kosice on Sunday and start team training on Monday.
National coach Toni Söderholm: “We are getting a player who has been one of the best goaltenders in the NHL in recent months. He is a strong personality who is good for our dressing room and therefore supports the team. His commitment is a very good thing for us at all levels.”
Already during the NHL visits DEBLast March, the Rosenheim native promised that he would take part in the World Cup.
sports director Stefan Schaidnagel had contacted the 27-year-old goalkeeper after his playoff exit against the San José Sharks: “With Philipp we are getting a world-class goalkeeper who will further strengthen our team. During our conversation in Denver, he expressly expressed his willingness to play for Germany. The fact that he is serving our national team after a long NHL season and intense playoffs shows his exemplary attitude and absolute professionalism.”
Due to the arrival of Philipp Grubauer, goalkeeper Dustin Strahlmeier will not be licensed for the World Cup. The goalie will travel home to Germany.
National coach Toni Söderholm: “Dustin has been with us since day one of the preparation. He had a strong season, especially because he was often under pressure. I like his work ethic, he's a good guy and has done everything to get his opportunities here with us. Now things have changed because he has to travel home, which is certainly disappointing for him. We talked to him about it for a long time and hope that he continues to attack.”
