The women's national team lost the quarterfinals at the 2019 IIHF Ice Hockey Women's World Championship. The team of women's national coach Christian Künast lost to the Canadian selection 0:5 (0:1, 0:2, 0:2) on Saturday evening. Germany will therefore finish the tournament in seventh place overall.
As expected, the Canadians started with pressure on the German goal. It took until the eighth minute before the favorites scored for the first time: Blayre Turnbull let the German defense out and gave Jenny Harß, who had returned to the goal for Ivonne Schröder, no chance to defend. As a result, the Canadians combined, but also had to accept two penalties, which gave the German team their first opportunities to score. Julia Zorn from the blue line and Laura Kluge from a tight angle tested Canadian goalkeeper Emerance Maschmeyer in the 16th minute. The women's national coach's team ultimately went into the third break with a 0-1 deficit.
In the middle period, the ten-time world champions established themselves in the German third. Captain Brianne Jenner finally deflected the puck into the goal after a shot by Sarah Nurse (28th minute). Two minutes later, Jenny Harß was there with her pads after a shot by Micah Zandee-Hart, but Laura Stacey was in the right place at the right post and pushed the puck over the line to make it 3-0 for the Canadians. In the 43rd minute, Jullian Saulnier's goal was disallowed because it was a skate goal. However, Natalie Spooner increased the lead to 60-4 0 seconds later. Blayre Turnbull put the final point on the scoreboard in the 52nd minute with a 5-0 win for Canada. The ten-time world champions are now in the World Cup semi-finals.
Christian Künast, women’s national coach: “We also showed a very good fighting performance in the last tournament game and gave everything until the last minute against an overpowering opponent. Ultimately we ended up in the top 8 in the world - this is a great success for German women's ice hockey! Now it’s time to build on that and look forward.”
Julia Zorn, captain of the women's national team: “We sold ourselves very dearly today and can be happy with our game. We wanted to play a great game and again had great support in goal with Jenny Harß. We have achieved our goal by reaching the quarter-finals and not being relegated. Now we have to continue to work hard in the future so that we can become even better as a team.”
