The U18 national team won its final preparation game before the 2019 IIHF U18 Ice Hockey World Championship. The team of U18 national coach Frank Fischöder defeated the French selection 6:5 (2:1, 2:2, 1:2, 0:0, 1:0) after a penalty shootout on Wednesday evening.
The DEB-Selection got off to a lightning start against France: Nino Kinder gave Germany the lead in the first minute. As a result, the French fought back, but had to accept their second goal shortly before the third break. Niklas Heyer scored for the German U18 national team to make it 2-1. In the 22nd minute, France equalized when they were outnumbered. But thanks to goals from Manuel Alberg and Jakub Borzecki, U18 national coach Frank Fischöder's team gained a two-goal lead. Shortly before the third break, the French reduced the score to 3:4 and finally turned the game around completely in the final period with goals in the 47th and 49th minutes. Jan-Luca Schumacher scored with his goal in the 52nd minute DEB-Selection into extra time. Both teams couldn't score there, so the penalty shootout had to decide. The French advanced with their second shooter, but Simon Gnyp and Manuel Alberg converted their penalties for the German team and thus ensured the 6:5 victory after the penalty shootout.
Frank Fischöder, U18 national coach: “Unfortunately, we didn’t take advantage of all of our chances to score on offense and thus gave the opponent the opportunity to stay in the game or come back. We defended too optimistically but still found a way to win the game. Now we are preparing intensively for the first World Cup game against Kazakhstan.”
