The German women's national team lost the last preliminary round game of the 2019 IIHF Ice Hockey Women's World Championship. Women's national coach Christian Künast's team lost 0-2 (0-0, 0-2, 0-0) in the game against the Czech Republic on Tuesday evening. The DEBThe selection is now in second place in Group B and will face the second-placed team in Group A in the World Cup quarter-finals, which will be determined in the current match between Canada and Finland.
The first chances to score in the game for group victory belonged to the Czechs, who had the first chances to score in the game. But goalkeeper Ivonne Schröder, who came on today instead of Jennifer Harß, did not allow a goal. As a result, both teams had the opportunity to score the opening goal in the majority. On the German side, Daria Gleißner and Anne Bartsch took their places in the penalty box - on the Czech side, Denisa Krizova received a two-minute penalty. But both teams didn't use their respective power plays, so after 20 minutes the game went into the locker room scoreless.
In the middle section the Czechs increased the pressure and kept the German defense busy. The shooting ratio in the second third was 14:5 – similar to the opening third (13:5). But the Czechs took advantage of two of their opportunities and took a 2-0 lead. Alena Mills initially shot the Czechs into the lead in the 34th minute - her shot went exactly into the top right corner. Two minutes later, the 28-year-old completed her brace and gave the Czech team a two-goal lead. In the final third, the German team made another attempt, but the Czechs disrupted the attacking game of women's national coach Christian Künast's team early on and did not allow a compelling scoring opportunity. On the other hand, Ivonne Schröder prevented further goals and was named best player after the game.
The German women's national team, like all teams, now has a day off. It hits on Thursday DEBselection will then face Canada or Finland in the World Cup quarter-finals.
