The women of ECDC Memmingen Indians have defended their title in the women's Bundesliga. In the third and decisive final game, the players defeated the record champions ESC Planegg 3-0 and were crowned German champions for the third time.
After a 4-1 win in Planneg, the Memmingen players had to accept a 2-3 defeat in their own hall yesterday. This led to the third edition of the final, which was again held in the Memmingen ice rink due to the Indians' better position in the table. Taylor Day with two goals and national player Marie Delarbre secured the hosts' victory on Sunday afternoon.
A total of over 2.200 spectators found their way to the ice rink in Memmingen on the two final days to support both teams. Among them on Saturday was DEBPresident Franz Reindl, who praised the great atmosphere at Hühnerberg. "It was an exciting final series and a successful playoff premiere for the women's Bundesliga," said Marion Herrmann, DEB-Women's representative and league manager of the women's Bundesliga, after the award ceremony. “The audience in Memmingen gave the final an appropriate and worthy setting.”
Women's national coach Christian Künast has been following numerous games in the women's national league in recent weeks to observe the national players for the upcoming World Championship in Espoo / Finland (April 4th to 14th, 2019). He was also a guest in Memmingen and was enthusiastic after the final: "Three great final games found a worthy champion. I saw two committed teams that gave it their all. That was advertising for German women's ice hockey!"
All information on how to prepare for the 2019 IIHF Women's Ice Hockey World Championship is available from the Deutscher Eishockey-Bund (DEB) will be announced at the beginning of next week.
