Teamsport Germany congratulates the German Handball Association on a successful tournament in their own country. By reaching the semi-finals and ultimately finishing in 4th place, the national handball team achieved a respectable success. “In addition to the sporting performance, the excellent organization of the entire tournament must also be highlighted. The DHB presented itself and Germany as a great host and organized a tournament at the highest level, with sold-out halls and a great atmosphere,” says Ingo Weiss, President of the German Basketball Federation and spokesman for the leading associations in the German Olympic Sports Confederation.
The Handball World Cup in Germany has once again shown the great enthusiasm that international major team sports events generate in our own country. With over 900.000 spectators at 96 games/an average of 9.440 per game, the arenas were located in Germany and Denmark Berlin, Munich, Cologne and Hamburg as well as Herning and Copenhagen with a new World Cup record. As a reminder: the 2017 GER/FRA Ice Hockey World Cup already had outstanding spectator numbers with 686.391 in 64 games (an average of 10.725 per game). The TV viewer numbers were also impressive. With an average of over 7 million viewers, a top value in the main round of over 10 million viewers and a record rating for the broadcast of the semi-finals of an average of 11,91 million viewers on public television, it was once again proven that team sports have a high level of popularity have social significance. Team sports in particular bring people together, promote cohesion and a sense of community, create role models for everyone and convey values such as fair play, motivation, team spirit and promote social commitment.
“Germany loves successful team sports passionately, the successful national handball team has proven this again, congratulations,” says DEB-President Franz Reindl.
However, sporting events of this magnitude are only possible in Germany with long-term solidarity between associations and politicians as well as the public. The handball world championship has once again shown how important it is that major international sporting events take place regularly in Germany. With the upcoming Beach Volleyball World Championships in Hamburg, the German Basketball Association's application for the 2021 European Championships and the 2024 European Championships in football and handball that have already been awarded to Germany, the associations are ensuring further sporting highlights in Germany. The member associations of Teamsport Germany will continue to rely on support from politics in the future and look forward to further expanding cooperation and support from federal politics in order to enable the organization of major tournaments in Germany in the future.
