The move to the NHL will take place after Deutschland Cup
National coach Marco Sturm will be DEB leave and move to the NHL. The 40-year-old will be an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Kings.
Last week, Sturm asked for release and thus the termination of his contract as national coach. This wish will be fulfilled DEB after the upcoming one Deutschland Cup in Krefeld.
“After Marco came to us with this request, we looked into it intensively and ultimately came to the decision that we could not deny him this opportunity. A German coach in the NHL is also a figurehead for our ice hockey,” says DEB-President Franz Reindl.
National coach Marco Sturm: “The timing of the request came as a surprise to me too. But the NHL was always my goal as a coach, so it's a dream come true for me. I am dem DEB not only grateful that he made this step possible for me. But also for giving me the chance to get into the business.”
After Ralph Krüger, Marco Sturm will be only the second German to hold a coaching position in the NHL.
His time as national coach will remain inextricably linked to winning the Olympic silver medal at the 2018 Winter Games in Pyeongchang. Next Sunday his time as national coach will end with the last tournament game of the Deutschland Cup 2018 end.
