The German U20 national team lost 5:8 (0:5, 1:1, 4:2) against the Eisbären Regensburg on Tuesday evening. U20 national coach Christian Künast's team was already 0-5 behind after the first third, but showed morale in the final section in front of 1.196 spectators in the Donau-Arena.
The U20 national team started with enthusiasm and created their first scoring opportunities within the two starting minutes. However, the Eisbären on the other side were ice-cold in front of the goal: within two minutes, Nikola Gajovsky had the goal of the goal floundering once when he was outnumbered and once during his own power play - the 2-0 lead for the hosts. They took the momentum with them and increased the result further with goals from Fabian Herrmann (9th) and Nikola Gajovski (11th). After the goal to make it 0-4, Christian Künast reacted, took a time out and substituted Philipp Maurer for the hapless Tobias Ancicka. But the 17-year-old goalie also got off to a bitter start: Constantin Ontl put the puck in the goal just 23 seconds after coming on to make it 5-0 for the Eisbären. The German team then stabilized and went into the dressing room with a five-goal deficit.
The U20 national team showed improvement in the second third - Justin Schütz scored the first German goal in the 27th minute. Fabian Herrmann restored the host's five-goal lead shortly before the third buzzer. In the final third, the U20 team showed morale. Dennis Lobach, Alexander Ehl, Marco Baßler and Justin Schütz made the result more attractive, even if the host scored another two goals. In the end this meant a 5:8 defeat for the U20 national team.
U20 national coach Christian Künast: “Today we weren’t ready in the first third. Accordingly, in the first third break we particularly addressed the team's will and willingness to run. Afterwards, our players did better. We gained important insights today and will continue on our path. A big thank you goes to Regensburg for making this game possible for us. They played very well today.”
