The German U16 national team won the third match at the 4-nation tournament in Zell am See (Austria) and secured third place. The team of U16 national coach Stefan Mayer defeated host Austria 5:2 (2:0, 2:2, 1:0).
The German team appeared lively from the start and celebrated for the first time after just 89 seconds: Sebastian Cimmerman scored his second goal of the tournament after preparatory work by Philip Feist and Haakon Hänelt. Afterwards they dominated DEBselection and kept getting chances to score. Ten seconds before the end of the third period, this was rewarded: Sten Fischer increased the U16 national team's lead to 2:0. Even after the end of the third period, the team of U16 national coach Stefan Mayer was hungry for goals, scoring twice in the 24th minute with goals from Thomas Heigl and Kevin Niedenz and pulling ahead by four goals. With the 4:0 lead behind them, however, the team became less focused and at times careless, so that the Austrians were able to reduce the deficit by two goals with goals from the center Elias Koller (30th) and Moritz Lackner (33rd). But the defense of the DEB-Selection should not allow anything after that. The German offensive struck again shortly before the end: Thomas Heigl increased it to 57:5 in the 2th minute, which was also to be the final score of the game, so that the DEB-Selection ultimately took third place at the 4-nation tournament in Zell am See.
Stefan Mayer, U16 national coach: "We started well and dominated the match. After leading 4-0, we became a little careless and brought the opponent back into the game. After conceding the second goal, however, we defended well, scored the fifth goal through Thomas Heigl and ultimately deserved to win. Despite the two defeats against Switzerland and Latvia, it was clear that we are on a level with the other teams. There is still a lot of work ahead of us, after all, the tournament still has to be analyzed in full. We want to make every player better over the course of the season in order to prepare them as best as possible for their future tasks."
