The German U16 national team will compete in the four-nation tournament in Zell am See (Austria) from August 20th to 24th, 2018. The Young Talent national players will meet hosts Austria, Latvia and Switzerland as part of the tournament.
In advance, a total of 43 players were given the opportunity to recommend themselves for the tournament as part of a summer camp in Füssen from August 1 to 4, 2018. "The players presented themselves as strong physically and athletically during the camp," explained Federal Young Talent coach Stefan Mayer after the camp. Learning effects were not only on the ice, but also off it: The players attended a lecture on nutrition and regeneration by Dr. Lutz Graumann. Dr. Tom Kossak also spoke to the Young Talent national players on the topics of sports psychology and game preparation, and representatives from the Fresenius University of Applied Sciences spoke on the topic of dual training. Axel Kuhlen from the Olympic Training Center Bayern served as a career advisor for the U16 national players. Professional referee Daniel Piechaczek led the internal meetings between the squad athletes. The on- and off-ice tests and training games completed the action plan of the U16 national players in Füssen. “Ultimately we watched and analyzed the players closely in camp and ultimately decided on two Goalies and 20 field players for the four-nation tournament,” summed up BundesYoung talent coach Stefan Mayer.
In the Zell am See ice rink, the 22 national players will first face Switzerland in the opening game on August 22, 2018, starting at 15.00 p.m. On the second day of the tournament, the German U16 national team will face the Latvian selection (August 23, 2018, 15.00 p.m.), before a showdown with the hosts from Austria (August 24, 2018, 13.00 p.m.). "These games will be the first benchmark for our U16 national team," explains Stefan Mayer. "After the tournament, we will know where our year group currently stands."
The interim standings and results of all games can be found after the tournament has started on the homepage of the Austrian association ÖEHV.
