In German professional ice hockey, promotion and relegation between the German Ice Hockey League (DEL) and the DEL2 will be reintroduced. The shareholders of the two leagues made a corresponding decision. Accordingly, in the 2020/21 season, a promoted or relegated team will be determined between the DEL and the DEL2005 for the first time since 06/2.
A corresponding agreement will be signed promptly.
Franz Reindl, DEB-President: “I am overjoyed that the two independent professional leagues have finally found a way. The fact that the famous cow is now off the ice is absolutely outstanding for our sport. All ice hockeyFans can look forward to the sporting permeability of all leagues. This will also strengthen major sporting and infrastructural impulses. My special thanks go to everyone involved in this process.”
Dr. Peter Merten, Chairman of the ESBG/DEL2 Supervisory Board: “We are happy to be able to present a common result at the end of what were not easy but always constructive negotiations. The winner of this agreement is the sport of ice hockey in Germany, because as in all other sports, promotion and relegation will also provide additional excitement in our sport. This offers the DEL2 clubs not only an important sporting but also an economic perspective.”
Jürgen Arnold, Chairman of the DEL Supervisory Board: “We are pleased that after such a long time there is an interlinking between the two leagues and of course we hope that this will provide an important impetus for our sport.”
